About Our Housing Programs

Char's House of Hope is a nonprofit organization providing independent living shared housing in the Metro Detroit area. We offer safe, affordable double room occupancy with all utilities included, along with comprehensive support services including resume creation assistance and application help for benefits programs.

We provide independent living shared housing with double room occupancy. Each resident shares a room with one other person in a safe, clean, and comfortable environment. All utilities (electricity, water, heat, and internet) are included in the housing arrangement.

Our Independent Living Houses are located throughout the Metro Detroit area. Specific locations are shared with approved applicants during the housing placement process. If you need housing outside of Metro Detroit, we can provide referrals to trusted partner organizations.

Our housing program is open to adults (18+) who are seeking stable, affordable housing in Metro Detroit. Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis considering factors such as current housing situation, income, and need for services. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds who are committed to working toward independence.

Our housing costs are based on affordability and individual circumstances. We work with residents to determine a fair contribution based on their income and situation. All utilities are included in the housing arrangement. Specific pricing details are discussed during the application and assessment process.

We do not accept pets at our housing facilities. However, service animals are always welcome as required by law.

No, there is absolutely no cost to submit your application or be placed on our housing waiting list. Our application process is completely free.

Wait times are based on your place on the waiting list and current housing availability. We maintain a first-come, first-served waiting list and contact applicants in order when space becomes available. You'll receive updates on your position and we'll notify you when housing is ready.

After your initial application, we may request proof of identity (driver's license, state ID, or passport), proof of income if applicable, and any documentation related to your current housing situation. Don't worry if you don't have all documents immediately—we'll work with you to gather what's needed.

Support Services

Services & Support

Beyond housing, we provide support services including assistance with applying for benefits (such as SNAP, Medicaid, and other government programs) and resume creation assistance to help you with job searches. Our goal is to help you achieve long-term stability and self-sufficiency.

Residents can stay in our housing program for up to 1 year. This time frame provides stable housing while you work toward independence and self-sufficiency. We work with each resident to develop a plan and set goals during their stay.
